This would have been much better as an article for a women's magazine. That is not to put it down...it would have made a great article about the persistence of a negative self-image, trying to prove yourself worthy, perseverance the face of hardship, etc. As a book it is too long, way too repetitive, lacking in any humor or self-perspective that isn't self-pity, and incredibly boring. It shouldn't be. The author has had a lifelong problem with her weight, and she shares her memories of humiliation and abuse with honesty. It's a harrowing look at what it's like to grow up fat in America. But there's no relief, no humor, and no evolution to a more balanced perspective. She's fat at the beginning, she's fat at the end, she made it up the mountain...but it seems that the only thing that means to her is that she proved a fat girl could do it. She doesn't really emerge with a positive self-image, the focus is still all about being fat. I wanted her to come to terms with that negative self-image and start loving herself as she is. Of course, it's her story, and should end the way she wants. But I was left with nothing at the end. I knew almost nothing more than I already knew about Africa, and having struggled with weight issues myself, felt that I had gained no new understanding or perspective from reading about her journey.
