On the Way to Casa Lotus is the true story of a woman who is uprooted from the culture where she feels safe and connected and new to the United States (Austin, TX) when she suddenly faces a major health crisis: a tumor on her adrenal gland. A simple surgery could have easily remedied her and ended the unexplained symptoms of dizziness and lethargy that had been devastating her for many months. But the surgeon accidentally removed her healthy adrenal gland, leaving her in much worse condition than when this crisis began, and causing a host of other medical problems that will last a lifetime.Despite this catastrophic outcome, the author decides that the only way for her to reach a place of inner peace and resume a "normal" life is to forgive the surgeon instead of pursuing legal action. Revenge in the form of legal action, she says would only have drained her.Although the medical journey is troubling, the author writes with such poetic beauty and offers such enlightening, uplifting and powerful insights about the hardships she has been through that the book is a delightfully lovely, moving and engaging read. The immersion in the author's Mexican family and culture added a refreshing touch. I read it quickly and found myself replaying many of its artful phrases over and over after finishing.Highly recommended.
